Grasping my Talon knife, I inched between the bins until I could see her. She stood silently, looking right and left. When she turned away from me, I leapt from my hiding place. Before she could cry out, I slapped a hand over her mouth and pulled her against me, my blade held to her throat. Screams wouldn’t do this far from home. I pressed the steel against her flesh in silent threat.

She gasped out a breath to warm my palm, raised and splayed the fingers of both hands, and stilled.

She mumbled something indiscernible through my hand.

I leaned to press my lips against one ear then whispered, “Scream and I’m going to leave you to bleed out in this fucking alley.”

Her hair tickled my nose as she nodded. When I moved the hand from her mouth, she huffed a single breath and let her arms drop.

“Tanner. I’m a Fed.”

I huffed out a hot breath then bore down the blade just enough to feel it twitch when she gulped. “And you’re stupid enough to tell me? What makes you think I’d even hesitate to slice you open and let you bleed out?” An instant thought about how it might be better to let her avatar live so I’d see her coming sprinted through my mind, and I relaxed my knife hand… if only a little.

“Come on. Just relax, Tanner.”

“Telling me to relax is bound to cause the opposite result. Go ahead, say it again.”

Words flooded from her mouth like her real life was in danger. “Okay. I get it. Some redhead pops up on the street and follows you. Your hackles rise. Can’t blame you after the last couple years. But give a girl a break, huh? You’ve been in the game for a long time, and my bosses have put two and two together. They know you’re up to something involving the Rossis, and they want to help. But I figured that wouldn’t work. I heard about how they accosted you near the gate and dragged you into that shop. They were pissed when your friends showed up and killed their avatars. They’ve got a real hard-on for Jack now. They’re searching high and low for him.”

“And why are you telling me all this?”

She sighed. “Could you remove the knife? I promise to keep my hands where you can see them. I’d rather make eye contact.”

“Hands up. I’m gonna frisk you.”

She raised her arms skyward without hesitation, and I wondered why that’d been so easy. “Go for it. I’ve got a weapon on my belt. That’s the only one.”

A long dagger sat in a sheath on her hip. I relived her of it then tossed it against the brick wall near the refuse boxes. She was otherwise clean. When I finished the one-handed pat-down, I stepped back.

Hands still held high, she turned like someone had given a spin to a carousel under her feet.

“Thank you.”

“A little early to thank me. Now, answer my question.”

“Why am I telling you all this?” Her shoulders twitched, but with her arms overhead, it didn’t make for much of a shrug.
